The Pennsylvania House Republican Policy Committee recently hosted a crucial hearing on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on our daily lives. The hearing aimed to understand the responsible use and advancement of AI in society. Testifiers at the hearing included Charles Palmer, an associate professor and program lead of Interactive Media at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Margaret Durkin, the executive director of PA and the Mid-Atlantic Region at TechNet, Madison Gooch, the vice president of watsonx at IBM, and the star of the show, Artificial Intelligence in the form of ChatGPT.

Speaking about the significance of generative AI, Charles Palmer stated, "The significance of generative AI in our contemporary world cannot be overstated. It stands at the cusp of revolutionizing how we conceive, create, and interact with digital content." This sentiment was echoed by Republican policymakers in Pennsylvania, who are keenly aware of the AI revolution. House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler recently announced the formation of the AI Opportunity Task Force, which aims to inform future legislative policy decisions relating to artificial intelligence.

Chairman Josh Kail expressed the importance of the hearing, saying, "As we seek to better understand the implications of AI technology, it was essential that our committee host a public discourse with experts. We need to be educated, well-versed, and poised to take advantage of utilizing AI to our benefit while also setting guardrails to prevent misuse. This may have been our first hearing on AI, but it certainly won't be the last."

The hearing provided an opportunity for experts in the field to share their insights and knowledge on the subject. It was an essential step towards developing a comprehensive understanding of AI and its potential applications. The committee aims to ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically, with proper regulations in place to prevent any misuse.

With AI technology rapidly advancing, it is crucial for policymakers to stay informed and up-to-date. By engaging in public discourse and hosting hearings like this, the Pennsylvania House Republican Policy Committee is taking proactive steps to understand the implications of AI and make informed legislative decisions.
