Rep. Doyle Heffley and the House Republican Policy Committee, led by Chairman Josh Kail, held a hearing to address Pennsylvania’s drug crisis. The session focused on the devastating impact of fentanyl and xylazine and strategies to combat the state’s drug epidemic.

The hearing, titled “A State Lost in Addiction: Pennsylvania’s Path to Recovery,” included testimony from several experts. Dr. Michael Lynch, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist from UPMC; Judge Steven T. O’Neill, who oversees Montgomery County’s drug treatment court; Chris Pawlowski, chief probation officer for Chester County; and Jessica Miraglia, assistant district attorney in Luzerne County, all shared their insights.

Data from the Office of Drug Surveillance and Misuse Prevention highlights the severity of the issue, reporting over 4,500 drug overdose deaths in Pennsylvania during 2023—equating to one death every two hours.

“The drug epidemic is fueling a historic public health crisis in Pennsylvania,” said Heffley. He emphasized the need for swift action by policymakers to tackle the rise in drug misuse and overdose deaths while ensuring law enforcement has necessary resources.

Kail stressed that every community is impacted by this worsening crisis. “The rate at which people are tragically dying from overdoses is unacceptable,” he stated. Kail called for efforts to remove illicit drugs from streets and provide support for those affected.
