Beaver County issued the following announcement on May 27.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine warned parents on Tuesday of a new syndrome linked to COVID-19 that affects children.

Parents should be aware of a new syndrome linked to COVID-19 that is affecting children, including nine in Pennsylvania, state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said Tuesday.

Known as MIS-C, for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, the illness has killed four children so far, three in New York state and one in Maryland, according to The Washington Post.

The Post also reported that some young adults have been diagnosed with the syndrome, which is similar to Kawasaki disease in which blood vessels become inflamed.

Levine warned parents to pay close attention for signs of MIS-C, such as persistent fever, high fever, a rash or change in skin color, swollen lymph nodes, red eyes, pink eye and stomach pain.

She said little is known about the risk factors or transmission of the syndrome. “This is why it is important for parents to be aware of the symptoms of this condition,” Levine said.

So far, there have been 17 suspected MIS-C cases in Pennsylvania, Levine said. Nine cases have been confirmed, two were found to be negative and the remaining six are still under investigation, she said.

Levine said the state Department of Health is working with pediatric and children’s hospitals in Pennsylvania to gather more data and information on the syndrome.

“It is important to remember that this is an evolving and changing situation,” Levine said.

Levine said Tuesday that there were 451 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 68,637. There were also 13 new deaths, which made the death toll on Tuesday 5,152.

The health department reported Beaver County with 570 cases and 72 deaths, while Lawrence County had 74 cases and eight deaths.
