Yesterday, Senator Elder Vogel's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) expansion legislation, Senate Bill 414, unanimously advanced from the Pennsylvania House and is now awaiting approval from Governor Josh Shapiro. The proposed legislation aims to provide better access to sexual assault nurse practitioners in Pennsylvania, ensuring that survivors receive thorough and efficient treatment.

Senator Vogel expressed his optimism about the bill's progress, stating, "We are now nearing the finish line for this critical piece of legislation as we wait for Gov. Shapiro's signature. Expanding access to sexual assault nurse practitioners in Pennsylvania will provide reassurance to sexual assault survivors that they will receive thorough and efficient treatment following the already traumatic experience they endured. I thank my colleagues in both chambers for helping advance this bill which I know will truly make a difference."

Senate Bill 414 seeks to expand the existing Penn State University SAFE-T Program and allow hospitals to establish their own Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs. Additionally, the bill would require the Department of Health to publish a comprehensive list of each SANE care-providing hospital on its website, categorized by county.

The importance of this legislation cannot be overstated. Sexual assault survivors often face immense physical and emotional trauma, and it is crucial that they have access to specialized care. By expanding the availability of sexual assault nurse practitioners, this bill ensures that survivors will receive the necessary support and expertise during their recovery process.

The proposed legislation has received widespread support from various stakeholders, recognizing the positive impact it will have on survivors of sexual assault. The ability for hospitals to establish their own SANE programs will improve access to care, especially in rural areas where resources may be limited.

In conclusion, Senator Vogel's SANE Expansion Legislation, Senate Bill 414, has unanimously advanced from the Pennsylvania House and is now awaiting Governor Josh Shapiro's approval. This legislation aims to expand access to sexual assault nurse practitioners, providing reassurance and support to survivors across Pennsylvania. By allowing hospitals to establish their own SANE programs and publishing a comprehensive list of care-providing hospitals, this bill ensures that survivors receive the thorough and efficient treatment they deserve.
