House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Joshua D. Kail and Rep. Rich Irvin, along with other lawmakers, will be hosting a hearing titled "Advancing Our Rural Connectivity" to address the crucial need for rural broadband expansion. The hearing will explore how what was once considered a luxury item has now become an essential part of everyday life.
The hearing will feature a panel of experts who will provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by rural areas in terms of connectivity. One of the testifiers, Debra Clark-Loner, executive director of Huntingdon County Business and Industry Inc., will shed light on the impact of limited broadband access on businesses in rural communities. Rachel Papuga, project manager of Alleghenies Broadband Inc., will discuss the efforts being made to bridge the digital divide in these areas.
David L. Smead Jr., fire chief of Shavers Creek Volunteer Fire Co., will speak about the importance of reliable internet access for emergency services in rural locations. Dwight Rittenhouse, representing the Rural Broadband Cooperative, will share insights on the cooperative's efforts to provide broadband services to underserved rural areas.
The hearing is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 16, at noon in the Bailey Ballroom of Huntingdon County's Bailey Building, located at 233 Penn St., Huntingdon, PA 16652. For those unable to attend in person, the hearing will be livestreamed on PAGOPPolicy.com, allowing broader access to the discussion.
The need for improved rural connectivity has gained significant attention as the pandemic highlighted the importance of internet access for remote work, education, telehealth, and other essential services. Chairman Joshua D. Kail emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, "Rural broadband expansion is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity for our communities to thrive and compete in the digital age."
Rep. Rich Irvin echoed this sentiment, highlighting the impact on education and economic development, stating, "Without reliable broadband access, our rural communities are at a severe disadvantage.
